“Imagine walking in the dark where the temperature slowly drops to freezing; where there are no walls to cling to; where sound is exponentially amplified and has no source. Imagine no moonlight by which to find your way and the soft, crunching sound of the arid landscape under your feet.
Pitch black. No wind. Snapping twigs. Hissing bushes. Low growls. Heavy footfalls. A metal bat for safety. An illuminated strand of land only three feet wide to guide you home.”
1999 attempts to recreate the memory of desert strolls with my cousins when I was seven. The pieces look at the world from the perspective of a child. This child views the world through the narrow lens of a flashlight’s illumination and little else. With so limited an outlook, the darkness takes on the role of an ominous void that could snatch up the child at a moment’s notice.
